One of the books we recommended for OKAL’s book club was Paulo Coelho’s Like a Flowing River. A book on his thoughts and reflections. We have made reference to Paulo Coelho in other blogs, this is simply because his books and quotes are so full of inspiration. In his book ‘Like a Flowing River’, one of his reflections is about How to Climb Mountains. As we get ready to close the year, we feel that it is only befitting that you start reflecting on which mountains you want to climb in 2023.
When discussing how to climb mountains, Paulo provides the following points that you need to take into consideration.
Choose the mountain you wish to climb
This is the time to start reflecting on what it is you want to achieve next year. What goals do you wish to set and what is the end in mind? Many suggestions will come your way, but what is it that YOU want to do? At the end of the day, you are the one who will be climbing the mountain, it will be your efforts and energy, so take time to reflect on this.
Find out how to reach the mountain
From a distance, reaching your mountain seems easy, but we all know that this is not the case in reality. There will be challenges and pit falls along the way. However, where there is a will, there is always a way, so explore your options, and if at first you do not succeed try and try again.
Learn from someone who has been there before
Do not be afraid to draw on other peoples’ experiences to help you along your journey. In life, we do need all the help we can get.
Dangers seen from close to are controllable
Pay attention to what is going on around you and stay on top of what you are doing and intend to achieve. When you are present and alert to what you are doing, you are better able to manoeuvre some of the surprising challenges that will come your way.
The landscape changes so make the most of it
As you climb your mountain, some of your perspectives will change, maybe some better strategies will formulate along the way. Enjoy the process, take time to stop, understand, reflect on what you have already achieved and assess how to move forward.
Respect your Body
As is easier said than done, keep your body healthy and fit and listen to your body. Sometimes we push ourselves too much to the point of exhaustion, it is usually during these times, that we fail to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Other times, we may move too slowly and you can literally feel your body craving some activity. Listen and respect what your body is saying to you, it is crucial to your success to climbing any mountain. Know when to move slowly, when to pick up speed and also when to take time to rest.
Respect your Soul
Use your journey to climbing your mountain as an opportunity to grow and learn. Speak positive words into your journey as you will need to strengthen yourself.
Be prepared to go the extra mile
Getting to the finish line may take longer than you expected. Like building a house, the finishing details usually take the longest time. Perhaps it is because you can finally see the end in sight and your expectations are high. Keep going, don’t slow down.
Be joyful when you reach the top
Celebrate reaching the top. You are your biggest cheerleader!
Make a Promise
Promise yourself that you will keep discovering new mountains. When you conquer one mountain, make a decision to climb another one. Keep challenging yourself, that is how you continue to develop your potential.
Tell your story
Share your lessons and experiences with others. Just like you have learnt from someone else, allow others to learn from you.
OKAL wishes you a Merry Christmas and all the Best in 2023
